Rupert Murdoch’s bid for Time Warner sent shockwaves throughout the media business landscape. This bit of news dominated the airwaves and online forums, this past week and while there have been a lot of chatter, permeated with questions its clear one of the reasons has to do with the shifting landscape of how consumers watch their favorite shows. TV has been the dominate force for many years with weekly series, when all of a sudden, it appears that the tide is turning in favor of on-demand shows.

In the last several years, On-Demand Internet streaming companies like Netflix, HBO and Hulu have had cable TV companies screaming in frustration at the success of popular shows like; Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Weeds and countless others that are being watched online by the very customers that were loyal to watching weekly TV series. Why bother waiting for next week when you can watch three episodes in one night? Many analysts and industry executives are predicting, Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox conglomerate will not give up in its pursuit of Time Warner for a host of profitable reasons among others.

You would not buy a pair of shoes after trying on one shoe. The same principle applies in choosing a time tracking software. At the very least, figure out whether your requirements can be met by asking questions about the hardware as well as software. The market-place is fraught with time and attendance solutions. And different vendors offer different solutions; some offer integration to CRM, HRIS, Payroll, ERP and Talent Management applications, while others offer different deployment options and a bevy of modules that can meet the needs of the largest companies. While all these applications serve a purpose and there may be some similarities with their functionalities, there will be differences in the way they operate.

Once you find the time and attendance solution that will fit your organizational needs, you can look for scalability. Don’t fall in love with a solution based purely on price or on a set of bells and whistles that you will probably never use. At the heart of your employee time and attendance software should be its ease-of-use and instant user base statistical data analysis. Who wants to go through five or more steps to access one report? By the same token, the application should be scalable enough to grow with your business.

Choosing the right time and attendance system to meet your business needs, is like choosing which shoe to buy.  You want to give those pair of shoes several glances, put them and then walk in them and see how they feel.  Your company’s chosen time tracking solution should manage your company’s specific business operations, complete with, real-time reporting capability and the ability to give you the control and insight you need to grow now and into the future.

The story of Goldilocks and the three bears is a fabulous children’s fairytale about choices. Its equivalent in the world of business automation choices, translates to the same thing. In choosing a time and attendance solution, some companies focus on their size as oppose to their requirements. While the size of your company (and in particular, number of employees) should not be left out of the equation, focusing on the actual requirements is a good barometer, for finding the right solution.

For example, the requirements of a company with 90 employees might include; job costing, three different company structures, separate collective agreements, 2 locations with different pay rules and separate payroll interfaces. A company with 300 employees might have all employees housed at the same location with work rules that are similar in nature across all departments. While this is not always the case, focusing on your company’s requirements will go a long way.

With a plethora of time and attendance systems to choose from, how do you find the solution for your business?  ATS TimeWork is a robust time tracking solution designed for mid-size and enterprise-size businesses. The solution is highly configurable and is flexible enough to grow and change as your business evolves. Whether you are looking to streamline payroll costs for the first time or looking to change from your current system, using the proper time and attendance software for your business is important.  Your time management system should be capable of managing the most basic functions as it relates to your company and, at the same time, be flexible enough to evolve with your business.

The Goldilocks methodology of trying out each bowl of porridge until she found the right one, lends credence to sampling your software in advance. However, by openly sharing your company’s requirements, you will save time by quickly figuring out which solution is right for your company.
