This issue largely depends on the company and its work-rule policies. Some of ATS’s larger customers have set policies in place that deals with vacation time and these policies clearly articulates what happens if and when benefit accruals  are carried over to the next year. On the other hand, small and mid-size companies, may have a verbal have understanding with their workforce regarding vacation and other leave requests.

An article written by Katie Johnson of The Boston Globe based on a recent survey states the following:

“A growing number of North American workers do not take all of their annual allotted days off, companies report. Although some of those days can be rolled over into the next year, workplace analysts estimate that more than half of employees lose at least some vacation every year.

With staffs reduced and workloads increased since the last recession, employees find it harder to get away. Technology has added to the expectation that employees are supposed to be on all the time — working evenings and weekends, checking in even when they finally do use some vacation time.”

Susan Krauss Whitbourne, PhD penned an article for Psychology Today that says, in part, “chronic stress takes its toll in part on our body’s ability to resist infection, maintain vital functions, and even ability to avoid injury. When you’re stressed out and tired, you are more likely to become ill, your arteries take a beating, and you’re more likely to have an accident. Your sleep will suffer, you won’t digest your food as well, and even the genetic material in the cells of your body may start to become altered in a bad way. Mentally, not only do you become more irritable, depressed, and anxious, but your memory will become worse and you’ll make poorer decisions. You’ll also be less fun to be with, causing you to become more isolated, lonely, and depressed.

It’s important for employees to stay on top of their allotted time-off and make the time to use them. An effective time and attendance system can help companies track vacation balances on-the-fly.  Studies show that when employees are well rested, they are productive and that in turn, can boost a company’s bottom-line.

Should Employees Use Up Their Vacation Time During The Calendar Year

Keeping costs low is a critical aspect for most companies who are thinking about deploying a time and attendance system. As cloud applications gain momentum businesses, are reaping the benefits of low cost of ownership (LCO) versus traditional on-premises applications. One of the more significant advantages for companies using a cloud based software system is the ability for their employees to use their smartphones and tablets to review their work schedules, check vacation balances and request time off.

Cloud applications give businesses, the opportunity to speed up all aspects of their organization by capturing and analyzing data in real-time. In the meantime, on-premises systems are slowly taking a back seat to the agility, versatility and speed of a cloud time and attendance system.

Today’s companies want to use modern technology that cater to their need for speed but does not “break the bank.” It’s important to note that these same companies are migrating to a cloud workforce management software to the improve collaboration and streamline payroll costs.

In a few short years, the cloud has changed the software deployment landscape. Businesses no longer have to pay large upfront fees for an on-premises application that takes several months and in some cases, years to complete.

Deployment of a Cloud Based Solution and its Low Cost of Ownership

Today, more than ever, companies are keenly aware what type of functionality that need in an employee time management solution. Oddly enough, when shopping for a time and attendance system, these same companies forget their requirements and opt for a solution based on its price. We do agree that price is important but when selecting a time an employee time management solution, it is important to make sure the product matches your requirements. Otherwise, you will be selecting a solution that meets some of your requirements while everything else is blurred by the attractive price point.

Every company has specific needs when it comes to a time and attendance comparison. And, assuming every solution is the same can be costly and present problems when it comes time for implementation. You may have determined that the multiple spreadsheet approach to keeping track of employee hours, vacation and pay policies has become too complicated and time-consuming. It’s important that you get your key operational personnel involved as you assess the needs of your organization pertaining to your time and attendance comparison.

After sales support should be an important element within any time management solution comparison. Look for a company that can prove a level of support that meets your company’s expectations and ask for references that support such claims. All too often companies rely on flashy demos that create an illusion of what’s to come. And when a time and attendance solution is selected is based on flash you are usually buying a bill of goods.

Of course some companies have had bad experiences but, that’s not only with time and attendance. Has your company purchase a CRM, Talent Management or HRIS software based on price? If so, is it still meeting your needs? If not, why? Share your stories, good and bad.

We have all shown up late for work at some point in our lives. Whether it was because the car broke down or the pet bird died, the excuses are limitless. So, it was no surprise to see a survey, conducted earlier this year by CareerBuilder, listing some of the reasons citied by employees for being late.

In our experience working with numerous organizations, we too have heard of the excuses given to companies by some of their employees. The top three include:

1)       Employee found out halfway on her way to work that she was in her pajamas and returned home to change in work clothes

2)       Employee showed up an hour after his start time because he was watching the hockey game which kept him up all night

3)       Employee’s car broke down for the 3rd time in a week

While a time and attendance system cannot stop employees from being late, it does capture patterns of attendance. These attendance patterns highlight the number of times an employee was absent and the reason. With one click of the ATS time and attendance system, you can generate real-time metrics and employee data analytics.
