Many companies have leave management policies in place to assist employees with time-off requests, and others are perhaps a bit strict in their approach to employee absence since it will impact the business and projects.  Each year several research firms and employment job sites generate a list of employee excuses for calling in sick. One of such most recent study is by CareerBuilder who publish a list of the top 10 excuses by for playing hooky.

These wonderful excuses include:

1) Employee just put a casserole in the oven.
2) Employee’s plastic surgery for enhancement purposes needed some “tweaking” to get it just right.
3) Employee was sitting in the bathroom and her feet and legs fell asleep. When she stood, up she fell and broke her ankle.
4) Employee had been at the casino all weekend and still had money left to play with on Monday morning.
5) Employee woke up in a good mood and didn’t want to ruin it.
6) Employee had a “lucky night” and didn’t know where he was.
7) Employee got stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store and couldn’t get out.
8) Employee had a gall stone they wanted to heal holistically.
9) Employee caught their uniform on fire by putting it in the microwave to dry.
10) Employee accidentally got on a plane.

Earlier this month, the topic of doctor “sick notes” became a hot topic when The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) mentioned that too much of it, takes away from their members regular duties. The media spent a considerable amount of time on the subject and it appears to have hit a nerve with both employee and employers alike.
In a recent CareerBuilder survey, featured on website is a list of the excuses employees gave when they called in sick. Some of them are downright funny, while others sound incredulous at best.

Below is a partial list of these excuses:

Excuse: Employee said the chemical in turkey made him fall asleep and he missed his shift.
Excuse: Employee’s false teeth flew out the window while driving down the highway.
Excuse: Employee felt like he was so angry he was going to hurt someone if he came in.
