Want Happy And Productive Employees? Avoid These Mistakes

February 13th, 2018 | Posted by ATS in Employee Productivity | HR | Leave Management | Productivity | Talent Management | Time and Attendance Blog, Workforce Management Software - (Comments Off on Want Happy And Productive Employees? Avoid These Mistakes)

Some companies extolled the virtues of their corporate philosophy in print and through the recruitment stages as an organization that cherish talent. It’s one thing to brag about how wonderful you are as a company, but it’s something entirely different if those things you talked about during the interview process, to lure good talent, do not materialize, once these candidates, become employees of your organization.

Want Happy And Productive Employees? Avoid These Mistakes

In writing for The HR Digest, Diana Coker dispenses some advice that you should heed in an article titled Dumb HR Policies That Demotivate Employees. Here are some of the things to avoid:

Merging Sick Leave and Vacation
This is one of the stupid rules most offices are still upholding till date, despite deep sensitization on this policy. Forcing your employees to take their vacations because they are sick is the dumbest thing any manager would do. As a manager, would you personally like to have your precious vacation because you are sick? The answer is NO if you want to be sincere. We all plan our vacations and deserve the best moment from it. Offices that merge sick leave and vacation will not only demotivate but encourage their employees to come to work sick, which means low productivity as well as exposing the healthy workers to the sickness if it’s contagious. At the tail end, the sickness goes round to everyone susceptible to it – going round to individuals that would still bring them to the office for more decrease in productivity. If an employee is sick and cannot go home because it would take away his or her vacation, they’ll force themselves to work demotivated.

 Banning Social Media
Recognizing social media as a channel for pleasures and distraction is already offensive and deprives your employees of a social life. Freedom to social media like Facebook or LinkedIn can help your employees to gain access to information that would help improve their performances. You can put it that banning social media limits your employee. Even if the employees are not being very professional as you want, getting their job done should be a criterion. Some employees go worst by banning internet use, that’s completely outrageous and a fight to force down productivity. Instead, keep your employee’s attention focused but don’t take away the trust.

 Crushing self-expression
I still can’t believe that some offices still keep up with this policy. Can employees not display personal belongings on their desk? That’s one of the dumb HR policies that shouldn’t have made it to the 20th century. It’s true that work environments deserve some level of sanity, but at the same time, people deserve to be who they are. This policy creates anxiety at work; it increases stress and renders break times invalid. Allow your employees to create a homey atmosphere. That helps them to be happier at work which improves productivity.

Keep current with ATS:

Every company wants to maintain its competitive edge by making sure its payroll costs is not too high while always looking for ways to increase its profits. Sometimes, that’s easier said than done. For example, a drastic cut to a company’s workforce or outsourcing of a department, might lead to decrease customer satisfaction and low employee morale. In other words, while it’s not impossible to achieve both objectives, it is sometimes easier on paper than in reality.

If your company is using a cloud-based business management software, the possibilities are endless. Today’s workforce is different from yesteryear and successful companies regardless of size or industry, know only too well, that in order to keep their position at the top they must find ways to improve productivity and streamline payroll costs. A Leap Of Faith Can Help Your Business Leverage The Benefits Of The Cloud

Here are some of the things you can look forward to, if you decide to take the leap, and embrace a cloud computing technology.

Say good-bye to that filing cabinet
Storing employee reports in a filing cabinet?  Just think about the amount of time, your payroll practitioner spends manually editing employee hours, chasing down department managers to confirm employees’ time- and then having to store that information in filing cabinet for future reference. Why bother? The cloud gives you the power to get up-to-the-minute reports all of which can be accessed, anytime, anywhere, 365 days a year.

Employee time-off requests
The days of employees walking to the HR office to submit a vacation request is quickly becoming a thing of the past and with good reason. With the surge of cloud computing apps that employees can access through their mobile device or workstations, requesting a day off makes the cloud an attractive proposition.

Vacation pay, overtime and accrual benefits
Spreadsheets can be a good tool for other tasks, but using it to track vacation, over time and accruals? With a cloud time and attendance, there is no need for spreadsheets. An ATS Time and Attendance Leave Management module automates the enforcement and tracking of provincial, federal, state, and employer-specific leave polices and requirements for a variety of qualified leave types, including family medical leave, and other related absences and provide notifications for managers and employees provide real-time updates on eligibility and case activities.

It should be noted, that resistance to change is inherent in all of us, even the ones who claim to be agents of change. If you are interested in learning how you can take a leap of faith and leverage the benefits of the cloud, you can register for one of our webinars, download a demonstration or contact ATS at 866.294.2467.

Canadian Federal Government Is Contemplating New Leave Management Policy

May 3rd, 2016 | Posted by Apex Time Solutions in Absence Management | Benefit Accruals | Employee Scheduling | Employee Self Service | Leave Management | Time and Attendance - (Comments Off on Canadian Federal Government Is Contemplating New Leave Management Policy)

The Canadian federal government recently mused about the possibility of updating parental leave, specifically for new dads. It made news and, for those who love and hate the idea both came out in full force and articulated their respective arguments through a variety of social media platforms. Whether you are or against it, one thing is clear, time is changing. This would perhaps be unheard of some 30 or 50 years ago. In actuality, there is nothing new about such a leave, because in the province of Quebec, new dads can take up five weeks leave while the province covers 70% of their salary.

The role of fatherhood has changed dramatically in the last several years. Josh levs a journalist for CNN wrote a book titled “All In” after he approached his employer to request time-off for the birth of his new baby. During an interview with Brigid Schulte of The Washington Post, he revealed, in part, “I’d been covering parenting issues for CNN, and then all of a sudden I was in the news. I was doing stories and columns on fatherhood, then my wife was about to have our daughter. My employer, Time Warner, had an extremely unusual policy: anyone could get 10 weeks of paid leave to take care of a new child – except the man who’d impregnated the mother of his child. Me. The biological father.”

Canadian Federal Government Is Contemplating New Leave Management Policy

So, will this type of leave management affect Canadian businesses? All indications are this is in the infancy stage. However, if you are one of those businesses who currently track employee vacation, and other time-off requests through a series of spreadsheets, it’s not too late to make the switch to an automated time and attendance system that will automatically track your company’s leave management.

ATS Time and Attendance Leave Management System automates employee time-off request. With ATS Leave Management System employers can accurately enforce leave management policies, and approvals based on an organization’s unique business processes.

How’s That Spreadsheet Working Out For You?

November 25th, 2015 | Posted by Apex Time Solutions in Benefit Accruals | Labour Costs | Leave Management | Overtime | Payroll | Time and Attendance - (Comments Off on How’s That Spreadsheet Working Out For You?)

Over the last several years, the issue of overtime has become, somewhat of an albatross for some companies but, in reality it does not have to be. When you consider how easy it is to automate employee attendance. And, with the advancement of cloud computing it has now become inexpensive and faster to deploy a time and attendance solution that will accurately track overtime hours. So, why do some companies consistently rely on paper time sheets when they can save costs by using an attendance system?

A recent article written by Eric B. Meyer for Eremedia says that although, the new overtime rules by the department of labor may not be enacted until the end of 2016, there are some steps that companies can take ahead of this law. They include:

 “Ensure that non-exempt employees receive minimum wage and overtime when they work more than 40 hours in a work week.
 Double check employee classifications to confirm that exempt employees truly are exempt (and vice-versa).
 Do you have independent contractors? Or are they employees whom you’ve simply labeled independent contractors? Now, may be a good time to vet that.”

Tracking employee overtime through the use of spreadsheets is a time-consuming process, but don’t fret, there is a better way. ATS TimeWork OnDemand is a cloud driven time and attendance application that delivers, on-the-spot predictive analytics, of employee attendance at your fingertips. Calling In Sick, Employees Top 10 Excuses

October 31st, 2014 | Posted by Apex Time Solutions in Absence Management | Benefit Accruals | Leave Management - (Comments Off on Calling In Sick, Employees Top 10 Excuses)

Many companies have leave management policies in place to assist employees with time-off requests, and others are perhaps a bit strict in their approach to employee absence since it will impact the business and projects.  Each year several research firms and employment job sites generate a list of employee excuses for calling in sick. One of such most recent study is by CareerBuilder who publish a list of the top 10 excuses by for playing hooky.

These wonderful excuses include:

1) Employee just put a casserole in the oven.
2) Employee’s plastic surgery for enhancement purposes needed some “tweaking” to get it just right.
3) Employee was sitting in the bathroom and her feet and legs fell asleep. When she stood, up she fell and broke her ankle.
4) Employee had been at the casino all weekend and still had money left to play with on Monday morning.
5) Employee woke up in a good mood and didn’t want to ruin it.
6) Employee had a “lucky night” and didn’t know where he was.
7) Employee got stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store and couldn’t get out.
8) Employee had a gall stone they wanted to heal holistically.
9) Employee caught their uniform on fire by putting it in the microwave to dry.
10) Employee accidentally got on a plane.

You can read the survey in its entirety by going to the company’s website. Yet many experts have also suggested that it’s important to take time off especially if it’s means your mental and physical health is at stake. In an article, titled “No more excuses: Take a day off” penned by Bob Barnett for CNN-details the importance of taking time off.

So, does your company allow for time off for those stressful days? If not, it might be time to approach your HR manager and ask about the company’s leave policies.
